Commemorating the 41st Death Anniversary of Benigno Aquino: A Legacy of Democracy and Justice

Remembering the Impact of Ninoy Aquino's Sacrifice

On August 21, 2023, the Philippines will observe the 41st death anniversary of Benigno Aquino. Aquino, fondly known as Ninoy, was a renowned democracy icon and former Senator who played a pivotal role in the fight against the Marcos dictatorship.

Aquino's assassination at the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983, marked a turning point in Philippine history. His death sparked nationwide protests and ignited the flame of resistance against authoritarian rule.

Honoring Ninoy's Legacy

In recognition of Aquino's legacy, the Philippine government has declared August 21 as Ninoy Aquino Day, a special non-working holiday (Republic Act 9492). On this day, Filipinos pay tribute to Aquino's unwavering dedication to democracy and freedom.

Various memorial events are held throughout the country, including speeches, wreath-laying ceremonies, and commemorative programs. These events serve as reminders of Aquino's life and the enduring impact of his sacrifice.

Recognizing the Significance of Ninoy's Day

  • Remembers the courage and sacrifice of a true national hero.
  • Inspires Filipinos to continue striving for democracy, justice, and human rights.
  • Promotes awareness of the importance of preserving democratic institutions.
  • Unites Filipinos in honoring a shared historical figure.

Pay Guidelines for Ninoy Aquino Day

Due to Ninoy Aquino Day being a special non-working holiday, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued guidelines on employee compensation (Labor Advisory No. 9, Series of 2024).

  • Employees not required to work on August 26 (Monday) shall be paid their regular daily wage.
  • Employees who report to work on August 26 shall receive an additional 30% of their regular wage.
  • Double compensation shall be paid to employees who worked on August 26 and rendered overtime services.

These guidelines aim to ensure that employees receive fair compensation for working on a holiday designated to honor a national hero.

Ninoy Aquino: A Symbol of Democratic Resistance

Ninoy Aquino's legacy extends beyond his tragic demise. He remains a powerful symbol of resistance against tyranny and oppression. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire Filipinos and serve as a reminder of the importance of fighting for freedom and justice.

The annual observance of Ninoy Aquino Day serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and the profound impact he has had on Philippine society.
