Bay Area Housing Crisis: Techies Paying Up to $900/Month for Tiny Bunk Beds

Meet the Pod

Amid the Bay Area's housing crisis, a new trend has emerged: pod hotels. These facilities offer tiny bunk bed pods as a cheaper alternative to traditional apartments. One such company, Brownstone Shared Housing, is renting out 700-square-foot pods for $800 a month.

Illegal Housing

However, a recent investigation has revealed that Brownstone Shared Housing may be operating illegally. The building in question is reportedly not zoned for residential use, and the pods are not up to code. The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection is currently investigating the matter.

Despite the potential legal issues, the pods remain popular with techies who are struggling to find affordable housing in the Bay Area. For $900 a month, renters can secure a full-fledged studio apartment with a private bathroom and kitchenette. This is significantly cheaper than the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, which is currently around $3,500 per month.

The Bay Area housing crisis has been a major issue for years, and the rise of pod hotels is a symptom of the problem. As the cost of housing continues to climb, more and more people are being forced to live in unconventional and often unsafe conditions.
